Principal's Message

DAWN COCKRELL
Principal

Dear Mapleton Families,

On behalf of the staff at Mapleton Elementary School, I am excited to welcome you to the 2019-20 school year!  Hopefully, the summer has provided you with an opportunity to rest and relax and spend time with family and friends.  As I begin my fifth year as Principal of Mapleton, I want to take a moment to let everyone know how blessed I feel to lead such an exemplary school that puts our students at the center of all we do.  This is truly a school with a foundation built upon trust and teamwork that unites staff, families, and our entire community in providing amazing learning experiences for our students.  We are eagerly looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential.

To our students:  I want you to know how excited we are to have you at Mapleton Elementary.  You are the reason we come to work every day, and we believe in your growth and success.  We want you to leave every day with a smile on your face, looking forward to the next day of learning, and realizing how very special you are.

To our parents and guardians:  We value your opinions and look forward to you partnering with us in your child’s education. We invite you to become an active participant in our school community through volunteering, joining our PTO, or attending and supporting school events. PTO will have an informational booth set up at Open House.  We send updated events and information in our weekly school and classroom newsletters and through each child’s student agenda.  We want you to know that you are welcome ANY time.

To all others:  We want you to know that we realize it takes an entire community coming together to create a successful school for our future leaders.  We are very thankful for all the support we have received from our community.  Your partnership and support have helped us make the positive growth with our students. We invite the entire community to take part in the excitement of our upcoming 2019-20 year at Mapleton Elementary, so don’t hesitate to contact us.

While there will be minimal changes to our team this year, we are very excited to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Ms. Casey Greene, to Mapleton.  She is a graduate of Montgomery County Schools.  She taught for several years in Montgomery County and last year in Fayette County.  We are also delighted to have several staff returning that were hired after the start of last year:  Ms. Erin Shillington, - FRYSC Director and three special education assistants - Amanda Rupe, Jessica Stephens, and Stacy Wilson.

Our theme this year is “Connecting to Character.”   We believe we must deliberately and passionately teach and model key beliefs so that our students really can become the best they can be!  At Mapleton, we believe that everyone can lead in some way and positively contribute to our school and community.  As part of this leadership work we will continue our student leadership teams, our monthly service learning projects, and our school wide positive behavior system.

Please mark your calendars for the following events:

This year is going to be amazing as we continue to provide academic experiences for our students that are rigorous, relevant, and help them build relationships while making real-world connections.  As your Principal, it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors – teachers, students, families, community members, and visitors – are excited to be here!  This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun, and nurturing environment.  My door is always open and I welcome your input.  Please feel free to call or email me to discuss any concerns you might have throughout the school year, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our Open House!

Sincerely,

Dawn Cockrell, Principal
