Dear Mapleton Families,
After six wonderful years as principal of Mapleton Elementary, 24 years with Montgomery County Schools, and 30 years in education, I have decided to retire at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. I want to begin by thanking each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for your support. I am beyond proud of the high level of success Mapleton has accomplished over these past six years. I have no doubt these successes were a result of a true commitment to TEAMWORK from the entire Mapleton family with our students at the absolute center of ALL we do each and every day. As a result of this successful partnership, our students have excelled across the district, state, and nation with academic success, student leadership (community and school service learning projects, leadership teams, clubs, character education & mentor programs, …), arts performances (Mickey Mouse, Schoolhouse Rock, Veteran’s Day, …) and so many other special events that are part of what makes our school “The Mapleton Way.”
Leadership at any time can be a challenge but these last six years have presented several unique challenges (unexpected loss of staff, redistricting, a global pandemic …). Therefore, I want to recognize and truly thank the Mapleton staff that have worked in partnership with me. Any time I’ve needed them to pull together and put in hours and hours of extra time, adjust from the norm, or think outside the box, they have stepped forward and given 110% without hesitation. They are true professionals committed to serving your children. I have said many times that my favorite part of the day is watching our students enter through the school doors at 7:15 a.m. and each and every staff member greeting them by name with a smile and special words of encouragement. This will be one of my many favorite memories I’ll treasure through the years. I also want to thank the leadership of our School Based Decision Making Council who have partnered with me over these last 6 years and helped our school excel.
Again, I want to thank you for all your encouragement, support, and trust you have shown me, and I want to express my appreciation for the support from our district leadership and this very special community. I also want to thank my husband, Kevin, and two children – Will (21) and Caroline (18), who are not so young anymore. They have been so very patient with having a wife and mother that made her career a HUGE part of her family!
I am confident that Mapleton will continue to flourish in academic excellence in the years to come and look forward to enjoying those celebrations as a lifelong member of this community. Please know that my dedication and commitment will continue throughout the summer as we transition to a new principal. Dr. Thompson and our School Based Decision Making Council (SBDM) will work with the staff, families, and community in the search for a new principal. They will communicate those details after spring break.
Proud Principal of
