Welcome to 6th Grade Language Arts! This year reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, speaking, and listening will all be part of the Language Arts class.

We are excited about the new Common Core Standards for English/Language Arts. Kentucky is making big strides in education.  Our state is the first state to adopt these standards and now over 45 states across the country have adopted the standards. You may find these standards for 6th grade at this webpage: http://www.education.ky.gov/KDE/Instructional+Resources/Curriculum+Documents+and+Resources/English+Language+Arts+Deconstructed+Standards.htm

The deconstructed standards document for 6th grade English/Language Arts is over 50 pages long, so I chose not to print the document. All of our lessons will be planned using these new standards. You may access those at any time on the www.education.ky.gov website above.

Textbooks Used: Elements of Literature; Elements of Language; Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics workbook; Holt Reader; and other novels

We will be reading fiction and nonfiction including short stories, plays, poetry, and novels. We will work on several types of writing especially narrative, persuasive, and informative writing. We will also work on improving grammar, vocabulary, and spelling skills. We will also be working on-demand writing several times each month.

Daily Required Materials: textbook, binder, agenda book, folder and composition notebook (both kept in class), pencil, and paper.

Method of Grade Calculation: Grades will be determined by averaging together all assignments each grading period.  Class assignments may include common unit assessments, weekly formative assessments (quizzes), tests (including vocabulary tests), projects, group work, journals, bellringers, homework, and class work.  Daily participation grades will be given. (All daily participation grades will be included as one grade in Infinite Campus at the end of the week. Participation grades may be based on coming to class with needed materials, attitude and work ethic, behavior, etc.)

Make-up Work Policy: Students that are absent shall make arrangements to get make-up work the first day back to school after an absence.  It is the student’s responsibility to get make-up work.  Students will have the number of days missed plus one to make up work.

Homework Note:  Students will have vocabulary words this year.  They will need to spend time studying the definitions at home. Other homework will be assigned as needed if students do not finish class work. Students will also have a reading log that will need to be signed by parents.  (More information will be given about this at a later date.)

Accelerated Reader:  Each student will be given an AR goal based on his/her reading level.

Please sign and return (you may keep the first two pages for reference)

I have read and understand the syllabus for Mrs. Queen’s reading class for the 2012-2013 school year.
