Course Content

This course will teach the 7th grade mathematics national common core standards. This year students will be responsible for learning concepts in the strands of the number system, expressions and equations, ratios and proportional relationships, geometry, statistics and probability. Students will also be using eight math practices with each unit. The goals for the seventh grade math strands/standards and math practices are listed below.

The Number System

• Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Expressions and Equations

• Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.

• Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

• Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Geometry

• Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.

• Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics and Probability

• Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.

• Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.

• Investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models

Standards-Based Grading System

Students will be graded strictly by mastery of the standards. In the grade book a student may receive a 1, 2, or 3. A score of 1 indicates a child has not mastered the standard and may need assistance, as well as, to complete separate assignments, tests, or quizzes in order to demonstrate mastery. A score of 2 indicates a child is progressing on the standard and still needs assistance. A score of 3 indicates the child has mastered the standard and will proceed to the next standard.   A score of 1 or 2 on any standard can be improved at any time during the nine week period.

Your grades will come from your ability to demonstrate mastery of the seventh grade mathematics learning targets based upon our unit assessments.

75% of your grade is based on achievement of specific learning targets demonstrated on unit tests.

25% of your grade is based on daily work, quizzes, daily assessments, homework & bell work

1- 33.3% 2- 66.7% 3- 100%

Homework

Homework will be assigned as needed. Students will be provided class time to complete assignments each day. If a student should not complete an assignment, it is the student’s responsibility to complete the assignment outside of class for homework. Additional resources will also be used for homework as needed.

Absence Policy

If a student has been absent it is his/her responsibility to check the google classroom for any missed assignment or class work, including bellwork.  It is the student’s responsibility to turn in any work that has been assigned from the date prior to absence and the absent time period.   It is the student’s responsibility to update their math notebook for any days missed. We will follow the school’s policy on the time period for work to be turned in.

Classroom Expectations

Be Respectful!

Understand that we are all different; it is important to be kind and respectful to students, teachers, and visitors.

Be Responsible!

It is important to come on time and prepared for class every day.

Work Hard!

I promise to do my best each day to help you learn and grow.  All I ask is that you give me your best effort to learn and try new things.
