Superintendent

Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Joshua E. Powell

Dr. Joshua E. Powell holds a B.A. from Berea College and a M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Western Kentucky University.  He and his wife Anna earned Ph.D. degrees from the University of Louisville.

The Powells have been blessed with four children, two of whom are currently students in the Montgomery County School System.  Dr. Powell shared with the staff on the opening day of school that he wanted the best treatment, opportunities, and education for his children - all 4,811 of them.  He said every employee of the school system should treat every child in the district as they would their own child.

With six years experience as a superintendent, Powell is well-known for his ability to produce dramatic improvement to school districts, having led two districts to some of the highest academic gains in Kentucky’s history. During his time in Montgomery County, he is proud of the actions taken by the Board of Education and the community support and involvement that led to pursuit of a Baldrige Performance Excellence Award, opening of the Sterling School alternative education site, the Berea-Camargo Connection, establishment of the Montgomery County Intermediate School, positive job growth in the district, a commitment to maintaining a 20:1 student-facutly ratio, a raise for district employees in spite of a challenging economic climate, and plans for development of an accelerated school program, among other accomplishments.

Dr. Powell has received many accolades including being named the 2007 and 2009 Kentucky Association of School Administrators Administrator of the Year and 2010 Berea College Young Alumnus. He has been asked to present at numerous state and national conferences (including second times at five national conferences in 2012), and has also been a featured panelist on the topics of school improvement and turnaround. In 2012, he was featured in the national District Administration magazine and the Kentucky School Boards Association Kentucky School Advocate publication.
