STLP Competition

The school system was well represented in regional STLP competition as students/groups from Camargo, Mapleton, Northview, McNabb, and MCHS advanced to state competition. Many thanks to the Tech Team for being there to help with any technical issues. (They reported there were very few this year.)

As you may be aware, Montgomery County Schools will be adding a fourth elementary school beginning in the 2018-19 school year.  Many of our parents complete a “waiver” form requesting for their students to attend a school outside of their home school attendance boundary, for a variety of reasons.  When possible, we have always tried to accommodate parental requests’ due to convenience, daycare options, etc.  This year, we will review waivers to consider placement outside the home attendance boundary from parents who complete the form ONLINE ONLY

Social Media Rumor 2/22/18

This morning, Thursday, February 22, 2018, we learned of a rumor circulating on social media suggesting that a gun had been brought to Montgomery County High School.  This is completely untrue and has been investigated fully.  Again, the rumor is false.

We encourage anyone with concerns to speak to an adult instead of sharing untrue rumors over social media which does nothing but make things worse.  Please discuss this with your children as well as model appropriate use of social media for them.

Again, concerns should be shared with an adult at school or by reporting to our Montgomery County Schools talk and text tip line at 859-279-4300.  Thank you for helping to be part of the solution in stopping untrue rumors from being shared on social media.

Smile Train Fundraiser

Last year, Jake Mills a student at Camargo started the Smile Train fundraiser to raise money for children who need cleft repair surgery.  Smile Train is an international children’s charity that provides 100%-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children in 85+ developing countries.  This year, Camargo’s STLP team decided to do the Smile Train Fundraiser as their project for competition, with the help of Jake.  The group wanted to raise at least $500, enough money to cover the cost of two surgeries.  Over the short period for the fundraiser, Camargo ended up collecting $1,555.63, exceeding their goal.

Safety is Our Number One Priority

The safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority. Earlier today, we were made aware of a rumor being shared on social media talking about a student planning to do harm tomorrow at a school identified only as MCHS.

In working with local law-enforcement and other school districts, it was determined that the MCHS in the post actually belongs to another school district in another region in Kentucky. Please know the other school district confirmed the situation had been taken care of last night.

We appreciate those who brought the rumor to our attention. We will, as always after a school break, be very diligent in our work with students tomorrow. Thank you.

TRIBE Day on 8/21/17

Montgomery County Schools will be closed for students on Monday, August 21st, 2017, and this day will be a non-traditional instruction day (TRIBE Day).  This decision was made with a focus on student safety after reviewing our transportation routes and times during the eclipse, discussing possible scenarios with our insurance agents, and monitoring decisions made by other school districts across the state.  The use of a Non-Traditional Instruction day provides a way for our families to best determine how they, as a family, want to experience the eclipse.

Through generous donations by the Montgomery County Education Foundation and Dr. Richard Henry at Henry Dental, all of our students will receive solar viewing glasses.  These will be sent home on Friday with our students along with eclipse-themed TRIBE Day materials and safety information about the eclipse for our families.  Even though schools are closed on this day, students will need to work on the eclipse-themed TRIBE Day lessons at home.  No assignments will require students to view the eclipse as that is up to you as families to discuss and determine if and how that would take place.

Daycare will be available on Monday, August 21st from 5:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Early Learning Center and MSE.   If possible, we encourage our families to try to avoid picking up their children during the eclipse times (between 1:03 p.m. and 3:54 p.m.) as we are unsure how traffic in the community may be affected.

First Grader Raises Money for Smile Train

Jake Mills is a first grade student in Ms. Mindy Jordan’s class at Camargo Elementary. Jake asked his mother, Karen Mills who is also a first grade teacher at Camargo, why the school couldn't try and raise money for kids with a cleft lip to help them pay for the surgery. He noticed how the school raises money for other causes and said Smile Train is important too. Smile Train is an international children’s charity that provides 100%-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children in 85+ developing countries. His mother told him he could set up an appointment and talk with his principal, Mrs. Dennie. After meeting with Mrs. Dennie, Jake set up a proposal and rules for the fundraiser. He helped collect and count the money. Jake wanted to raise at least $250, enough money to cover the cost of one surgery. Over the short period for the fundraiser, Camargo ended up collecting $512.99, exceeding his goal!

CAMARGO'S WORD OF THE WEEK

CAMARGO'S WORD OF THE WEEK

PERSUADE

Persuade means to try to convince someone to do what you want.

Example:  Kelly persuaded Sam to jump rope instead of playing dodge ball.

9/11 Heightened Awareness

We are aware that several school districts across the country have been the subject of anonymous, general  threats via social media today, the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.  Across the state and country, law enforcement agencies, including our school police officers, are investigating the threats.  All threats are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly to make sure students are safe.

The social media posts appear to be generic and without credibility.  However, please be assured that the safety of our students is top priority.  The level of awareness at all schools has been raised as a precautionary measure.   As always, if you see suspicious behavior, please contact local law enforcement or the school district.

To the Parents/Guardians of Montgomery County High School Students:

We write to inform you of a situation that occurred today at Montgomery County High School.  At approximately 11:30 a.m., the high school went into a lock down as a precautionary measure due to an isolated instance involving the well-being of one student.  No other students were ever in any danger and the lock down was lifted at approximately 12:00 p.m.  Student safety is always our top priority and we want to commend our students and staff for how well they handled themselves during the lock down.

Sincerely,

Increased Security Notification

SAFETY & SECURITY NOTICE:

Our community has joined the nation in expressing our grief and outrage over recent events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. In a proactive response, the Montgomery County School System, including the Montgomery County School District Police Department, has united with City and County law enforcement to reevaluate and strengthen security procedures in our school district.

We hope that you will feel more secure, and certainly that you will not be alarmed, when you see an increased police presence in our schools. We also request your patience and ask that you not take offense if you are subjected to a more rigid screening process when entering one of our facilities.

We will continue to offer the best customer service possible, but cannot and will not be lax when it comes to the safety and protection of our children and staff.

Thank you.
