The school system was well represented in regional STLP competition as students/groups from Camargo, Mapleton, Northview, McNabb, and MCHS advanced to state competition. Kudos to the judges for their hard work. Schools have to supply a judge or their projects will not be judged. (Judges don’t evaluate their own school.) Many thanks to the Tech Team for being there to help with any technical issues. (They reported there were very few this year.)

Social Media Rumor 2/22/18

This morning, Thursday, February 22, 2018, we learned of a rumor circulating on social media suggesting that a gun had been brought to Montgomery County High School.  This is completely untrue and has been investigated fully.  Again, the rumor is false.

We encourage anyone with concerns to speak to an adult instead of sharing untrue rumors over social media which does nothing but make things worse.  Please discuss this with your children as well as model appropriate use of social media for them.

Again, concerns should be shared with an adult at school or by reporting to our Montgomery County Schools talk and text tip line at 859-279-4300.  Thank you for helping to be part of the solution in stopping untrue rumors from being shared on social media.

Vote for the Banner of Your Choice

Each school district has been invited to design a banner for display at the 82nd Annual Kentucky School Boards Association Conference scheduled for March 2018 at the Galt House in Louisville. The banners are a very important contribution to the conference, reminding attendees of schools' primary focus -- learning and learners. In order to be displayed at the conference, the banner must identify the school district and depict the conference theme:

"Kentucky School Boards: Adapting and Achieving”

Only one banner from each school district is allowed. We are asking our students, staff, and community to vote for the one that will represent Montgomery County at the KSBA annual conference. Voting will end Wednesday, December 20th at 4:30 p.m.

Vote for your favorite choice.

FBLA Visits McNabb Students

On November 28, the FBLA chapter 5341 American Enterprise Team visited McNabb Middle School to educate and inform seventh and eighth grade students on financial literacy and fiscal responsibility. Students also learned what it means to have access to a free enterprise marketplace in America. Team members compiled a list of financial related questions and administered a pre-test to see where the students understanding was before the lesson was taught. Students then played the Game of Life and had to make month to month decisions based on their individual budget, including car payments, utilities bills, mortgages, and entertainment expenses. After the game was complete, students were administered the same test and asked to complete it with their newfound financial knowledge. The results of the pre and post-test showed great improvement. The FBLA chapter ensures each year they observe and teach the importance of the American Enterprise system.

Safety is Our Number One Priority

The safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority. Earlier today, we were made aware of a rumor being shared on social media talking about a student planning to do harm tomorrow at a school identified only as MCHS.

In working with local law-enforcement and other school districts, it was determined that the MCHS in the post actually belongs to another school district in another region in Kentucky. Please know the other school district confirmed the situation had been taken care of last night.

We appreciate those who brought the rumor to our attention. We will, as always after a school break, be very diligent in our work with students tomorrow. Thank you.

At no point should a student exit the vehicle in the middle of the street (Woodford Drive).  McNabb and the high school have lines designated to drop off and pick up students. Please take time and exercise patience when following pick up and drop off protocols, which are designed with safety in mind for all involved. TRIBE Day on 8/21/17

Montgomery County Schools will be closed for students on Monday, August 21st, 2017, and this day will be a non-traditional instruction day (TRIBE Day).  This decision was made with a focus on student safety after reviewing our transportation routes and times during the eclipse, discussing possible scenarios with our insurance agents, and monitoring decisions made by other school districts across the state.  The use of a Non-Traditional Instruction day provides a way for our families to best determine how they, as a family, want to experience the eclipse.

Through generous donations by the Montgomery County Education Foundation and Dr. Richard Henry at Henry Dental, all of our students will receive solar viewing glasses.  These will be sent home on Friday with our students along with eclipse-themed TRIBE Day materials and safety information about the eclipse for our families.  Even though schools are closed on this day, students will need to work on the eclipse-themed TRIBE Day lessons at home.  No assignments will require students to view the eclipse as that is up to you as families to discuss and determine if and how that would take place.

Daycare will be available on Monday, August 21st from 5:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Early Learning Center and MSE.   If possible, we encourage our families to try to avoid picking up their children during the eclipse times (between 1:03 p.m. and 3:54 p.m.) as we are unsure how traffic in the community may be affected.

Vote for the Banner of Your Choice

Each school district has been invited to design a banner for display at the 81st Annual Kentucky School Boards Association Conference scheduled for February 2017 at the Galt House in Louisville. The banners are a very important contribution to the conference, reminding attendees of schools' primary focus -- learning and learners. In order to be displayed at the conference, the banner must identify the school district and depict the conference theme:

"Be a Superhero for Public Education!"

Only one banner from each school district is allowed. Each school has created a banner and we are asking our students, staff, and community to vote for the one that will represent Montgomery County at the KSBA annual conference. Voting will end Wednesday, December 21st at 4 p.m.

We Are Thankful- Letter to Our Families Give Thanks

November 19, 2016

Dear Families,

We are thankful!

As we prepare to take a short break from school for Thanksgiving, we want to express our gratitude for everyone who makes it possible for as many students as possible to come to school every day, on time, ready to learn. We thank:

  • Our students and families for making daily attendance a priority since they know the habit of attendance will help them do well in the classroom and eventually in a job.
  • Our wonderful teachers who pour their energy into making each classroom an exciting place for exploration and knowledge so children do not want to miss out on learning
  • Our support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need

We appreciate each one of you so much. We look forward to seeing you after the Thanksgiving holiday. We also hope you will keep in mind that school is closed on November 23-25 and reopens November 28.

We especially appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking extra days off during the Thanksgiving holiday. Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and leave your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

Sterling Elementary, Tuesday, September 13th from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.; and MCHS, Saturday, October 1st from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.  A background check may be picked up at any of our schools, our Central Office, or at the orientations.  For further information contact Jeff Perkins at (859) 497-8724 ext. 229.

Please note that the date of the volunteer orientation at MCHS has been changed from Saturday, Sept. 24, to Saturday, Oct. 1.  The time, 9:00 – 10:00, is the same.

Vote for Your Favorite Banner

Each school district has been invited to design a banner for display at the 80th Annual Kentucky School Boards Association Conference scheduled for February 2016 at the Galt House in Louisville. The banners are a very important contribution to the conference, reminding attendees of schools' primary focus -- learning and learners. In order to be displayed at the conference, the banner must identify the school district and depict the conference theme:

"From chalkboards to whiteboards: 8 decades of serving school boards"

Only one banner from each school district is allowed. Each school has created a banner and we are asking our students, staff, and community to vote for the one that will represent Montgomery County at the KSBA annual conference. Please click here to vote for your favorite choice. Voting will end Friday, December 18th at 4 p.m.

I wanted to let each of you know about a situation at Montgomery County High School this afternoon.  After an anonymous tip, a vehicle in the parking lot was found to have two unloaded hunting rifles, ammunition, and a bow with arrows inside.  At no time were students or staff in any danger, however, we are following school board policies and working with local law enforcement to apply the appropriate laws to deal with this event.

Please take this opportunity to talk with your children about safety and the importance of reporting dangerous situations to adults.  Please remember that anyone can report unsafe or dangerous situations to the talk and text tip line at 859-279-4300.

Safety First OneCall 10/08/15

October 8, 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Student safety is always our number one priority in Montgomery County Schools.  An event happened today at McNabb Middle School that we felt we needed to inform parents about.

A threatening message, general in nature, was found written on the wall in one of the bathrooms.  The message was very similar to ones at Eastern Kentucky University and Madison County Schools that have been on local television news this past week.  We take every threat seriously and investigate each fully.  This general threat does not appear to have any credibility and seems to be a situation of copying something seen on the news.  We have no reason to think students and staff were ever in danger.  However, law enforcement will have an increased presence at McNabb during the next few days.

We want to commend our students who brought this to the attention of an adult and would ask all of our parents/guardians to take this opportunity to talk with your children about school safety and informing adults if your child has any information about this situation.

Sincerely,

Adam Adkins

Principal

Matt Thompson, EdD

Superintendent

MoCo Employees Present at Continuous Improvement Summit

Stephanie Harris, Director of Elementary Schools, Corenna Fowler, Mapleton 4th grade teacher, and Sarah Woodford, former Camargo Elementary Principal (now employed with Fayette County Schools) presented a session on September 21, 2015 at the Kentucky Continuous Improvement Summit in Lexington.  Their session entitled, “On Target:  Teaching with Intentionality” was well attended and well received.  The presentation focused on combining standards-based grading, rigorous assessments, and student ownership of learning.

9/11 Heightened Awareness

We are aware that several school districts across the country have been the subject of anonymous, general  threats via social media today, the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.  Across the state and country, law enforcement agencies, including our school police officers, are investigating the threats.  All threats are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly to make sure students are safe.

The social media posts appear to be generic and without credibility.  However, please be assured that the safety of our students is top priority.  The level of awareness at all schools has been raised as a precautionary measure.   As always, if you see suspicious behavior, please contact local law enforcement or the school district.

High School Lock Down 9/3/2015

9/3/15

To the Parents/Guardians of Montgomery County High School Students:

We write to inform you of a situation that occurred today at Montgomery County High School.  At approximately 11:30 a.m., the high school went into a lock down as a precautionary measure due to an isolated instance involving the well-being of one student.  No other students were ever in any danger and the lock down was lifted at approximately 12:00 p.m.  Student safety is always our top priority and we want to commend our students and staff for how well they handled themselves during the lock down.

Sincerely,

Increased Security Notification

SAFETY & SECURITY NOTICE:

Our community has joined the nation in expressing our grief and outrage over recent events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. In a proactive response, the Montgomery County School System, including the Montgomery County School District Police Department, has united with City and County law enforcement to reevaluate and strengthen security procedures in our school district.

We hope that you will feel more secure, and certainly that you will not be alarmed, when you see an increased police presence in our schools. We also request your patience and ask that you not take offense if you are subjected to a more rigid screening process when entering one of our facilities.

We will continue to offer the best customer service possible, but cannot and will not be lax when it comes to the safety and protection of our children and staff.

Thank you.

I just discovered today that there was a technical problem with my "smart" phone and several of the e-mails I replied to from the phone did not get delivered and my voice mail was not functioning at all. If you tried to contact me and I have not gotten back to you, I apologize. Please try again, we welcome your input.

Make Up Snow Days!!!
Happy New Year!

Montgomery County Schools will designate February 21 as a make-up day for one of the days we missed for inclement weather. (Pending Board Approval).

The Board of Education approved the 2010-11 calendar to include using part of –or all of spring break as make up days if we miss 10 or more days of school.  This looks like a sincere possibility with the early snow days of December 2010.  Montgomery County Schools are prepared to go to school during spring break if the snow days accumulate to 10.  Thank you, Gay Elliott
